When the initial dealer has shuffled the deck, each player in turn receives a card. The player with the highest card receives the right to deal. In some games, the kicker is the highest ranking card. In some variations, the ace is treated as the lowest card. In others, the highest card is the five of a kind. The kicker is the fifth card in a four of a kind hand.
A round of betting is followed by a showdown. In this stage, all the players must show their cards. If no one has a better hand, then the pot will be won. If there are two hands that are identical, then the ties are broken by secondary pairs. The highest unmatched card in each hand breaks the tie.
The pot can be won by a player who makes the highest bet, regardless of the other players’ bets. Occasionally, players will win the pot by bluffing. This is done by putting money into the pot only when they are trying to bluff their opponents. This bluffing strategy distinguishes poker from other vying card games.
In most modern versions of the game, the players are forced to place a bet. The terms “ante” and “blind” are commonly used. The ante is a minimum bet, typically based on the stakes of the game. The blind is a bet that a player cannot make without having a card.
